Brendan Bowles is certified as a Specialist in Construction Law by the Law Society of Upper Canada. Brendan is ranked as “consistently recommended” in the area of Construction Law by Lexpert. In 2014 he was named as a “Litigation Lawyer to Watch” in the Lexpert US Cross-Border Guide – Litigation. He has acted for various players in the construction industry, including owners, sureties, subcontractors and suppliers, general contractors and design professionals.
Brendan has appeared at all levels of Ontario courts, up to and including the Court of Appeal. He also has trial experience in various types of construction claim cases, including construction liens, claims for deficiency and poor workmanship, and the defence of a professional negligence claim arising out of a construction lien action.
Brendan is an Associate of Canadian Surety Bonding (A.C.S.B.). This designation is conferred by the Surety Association of Canada upon the completion of courses at the University of Toronto in suretyship, construction and surety law, accounting and business. He has also authored and co-authored articles on various topics related to construction law.
Brendan is a frequent speaker on construction law topics. He was the Continuing Legal Education liason for the OBA Construction and Infrastructure Law Section from 2006 to 2009, and has co-chaired a number of CLE programs for the OBA. Brendan taught the Construction Law course to third and fourth year students at the school of Architectural Science of Ryerson University from 2006 to 2010, and from 2011 to 2013 taught a course in Law and Construction Contracts at the Centre for Construction and Engineering Technologies at George Brown College in Toronto. Both courses cover a whole range of issues, including contract and negligence law, tendering, construction liens, surety bonds and dispute resolution. In addition, Brendan has acted as an independent study director for the University of Ottawa Faculty of Law, Common Law Section.
Brendan has been a member of the Executive of the Construction and Infrastructure Law Section of the Ontario Bar Association since 2002, most recently as Chair in the 2015-2016 term. In 2017 Brendan was admitted as a Fellow to the Canadian College of Construction Lawyers.
