Bio

Matthew assists clients in a broad range of construction law matters, from large-scale public infrastructure, mining, and industrial projects to commercial and residential developments. His practice encompasses guiding clients through complex construction disputes, including litigation, arbitration, mediation, ODACC adjudication, and informal dispute resolution. Matthew also has a robust contract drafting and review practice, and has experience with contracts at each level of the construction pyramid, including both construction and design contracts. Matthew has extensive experience preparing, revising, and assisting clients with the administration of bespoke and standard form contracts, including CCDC, FIDIC, CCA, OAA and RAIC agreements.

Matthew brings a unique perspective to his legal practice, having worked as a licensed Professional Engineer in Ontario with a successful career in construction management prior to becoming a lawyer. This dual background enables him to offer clients practical, technically informed guidance on project-level matters, claims strategy, and risk mitigation.

His representative work includes preparing the full suite of construction and design contracts for a $1 billion steel manufacturing facility, where he supported project management and commercial teams over a multi-year engagement. He has also successfully negotiated high-value contracts, including a bespoke contract exceeding $250 million for equipment supply and commissioning. In his litigation practice, Matthew has extensive experience with construction lien, breach of trust, breach of contract, and negligence actions before the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, the Courts of Nova Scotia, and the Nunavut Court of Justice. He also has extensive experience with ODACC adjudications conducted in accordance with Part II.1 of Ontario's Construction Act.

Matthew is a published author on construction law topics, including his article "Time Is Up: Mandating Municipal Green Construction Initiatives in Canada" in the Journal of the Canadian College of Construction Lawyers. He is also a regular speaker on construction law matters, including prompt payment and adjudication under Ontario's Construction Act.
